Healed Part 3 Sermon Notes

Healed – Part 3: Healing the Mind and Spirit

Mark 5:1–20 (NKJV)

Series Theme: Healed

God’s desire is not merely to heal our bodies but to make us whole. Through Jesus Christ, God offers healing for every part of our lives—our bodies, our minds, our emotions, and our spirits.

2026 Vision: “All Things New”

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
II Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV)

2026 Declaration

“I’m becoming who God wants me to be.”

This year we are challenged to:

  • Believe – Trust God, trust the process, hear God clearly, and respond in worship.
  • Belong – Honor God, honor yourself, honor others, and create an environment for healing.
  • Become – Represent God everywhere, be the light in the room, and live as an ambassador for Christ.

Introduction

In Mark 5, Jesus encounters a man whose life has been devastated by an unclean spirit. He has lost control of his thoughts, relationships, and behavior. Yet one encounter with Jesus completely transforms him.

This miracle reminds us that Jesus is concerned about more than physical healing. He also heals wounded minds, broken emotions, and troubled spirits.

No matter how deep the hurt or how severe the struggle, Christ has authority to restore us.

1. Recognize the Source of Sickness

Scripture

“Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gadarenes. And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit.”

Mark 5:1–2 (NKJV)

The man was suffering because something spiritually unclean had taken hold of his life.

Just as germs can infect the body, sinful influences can infect the mind and spirit.

Jesus reminds us that what enters our hearts through our eyes, ears, and minds matters.

Supporting Scriptures

“The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness…”

Matthew 6:22–23 (NKJV)

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…”

Romans 12:2 (NKJV)

”…bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”

II Corinthians 10:3–6 (NKJV)

Life Application

Our minds are constantly being influenced.

  • What we watch
  • What we listen to
  • The voices we trust
  • The thoughts we entertain

If we continually feed our minds unhealthy influences, our spirits become vulnerable.

Questions for Reflection

  • What influences are shaping my thinking every day?
  • Are the things I consume drawing me closer to Christ or farther away?
  • What thoughts need to be brought into obedience to Christ?

Weekly Challenge

Spend time each day replacing worldly influences with God’s Word.

  • Read Scripture before scrolling social media.
  • Listen to worship music.
  • Pray over your thoughts throughout the day.

2. Recognize the Symptoms of Sickness

Scripture

”…who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind him… And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones.”

Mark 5:3–5 (NKJV)

The man’s condition revealed the depth of his spiritual and emotional sickness.

His symptoms included:

  • Isolation
  • Broken relationships
  • Loss of self-control
  • Emotional torment
  • Self-destructive behavior

Not every struggle is caused by demon possession, but Scripture reminds us that spiritual, emotional, and mental struggles are real and should never be ignored.

Sometimes emotional pain begins affecting every area of life.

Examples include:

  • Unforgiveness
  • Anxiety
  • Hatred
  • Chronic stress
  • Jealousy
  • Depression
  • Grief
  • Fear

Unchecked, these struggles can damage our relationships, health, and spiritual walk.

Questions for Reflection

  • What unhealthy emotions have I allowed to remain in my heart?
  • Have stress or anxiety begun affecting my physical health?
  • Am I carrying wounds that only Jesus can heal?

Weekly Challenge

Ask God to honestly reveal areas of emotional or spiritual pain.

Talk with a trusted pastor, mature believer, or Christian counselor if needed.

Healing begins with honesty.

3. Trust the Sovereign Over Sickness

Scripture

“When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him. And he cried out with a loud voice and said, ‘What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?…’”

Mark 5:6–7 (NKJV)

Even the demons recognized Jesus’ authority.

The sickness bowed before the Savior.

This reminds us that there is no condition beyond Christ’s authority.

Jesus is Lord over:

  • sickness
  • fear
  • depression
  • anxiety
  • addiction
  • brokenness
  • spiritual oppression

Nothing is greater than the authority of Jesus Christ.

Questions for Reflection

  • Do I truly believe Jesus has authority over my greatest struggle?
  • Where have I placed more faith in fear than in Christ?
  • Am I trusting Jesus or merely worrying about my situation?

Weekly Challenge

Each day this week, surrender one specific burden to Jesus in prayer.

Instead of repeating your fears, repeat God’s promises.

4. Understand the Severity of Sickness

Scripture

“Then He asked him, ‘What is your name?’ And he answered, saying, ‘My name is Legion; for we are many.’”

Mark 5:9 (NKJV)

The demons identified themselves as Legion, suggesting overwhelming oppression.

Some wounds develop over years.

Some hurts multiply.

Some struggles become deeply rooted.

Many people silently carry:

  • childhood trauma
  • rejection
  • abandonment
  • shame
  • guilt
  • disappointment
  • grief
  • bitterness

These burdens often affect every area of life.

Yet no matter how severe the problem appears, Jesus is still greater.

Questions for Reflection

  • What long-standing hurts am I still carrying?
  • Have I accepted brokenness as “normal”?
  • What burden have I stopped believing God can heal?

Weekly Challenge

Stop minimizing your pain—but also stop magnifying it above Christ.

Bring your deepest wounds before Jesus.

5. Receive God’s Solution for Sickness

Scripture

“Then the unclean spirits went out and entered the swine…”

Mark 5:13 (NKJV)

Jesus did not negotiate with the unclean spirits.

He removed them.

Healing often requires removal.

Sometimes God must remove:

  • sinful habits
  • destructive thinking
  • unhealthy relationships
  • bitterness
  • unforgiveness
  • spiritual strongholds

Healing isn’t simply adding something new.

Sometimes healing begins by casting something out.

Questions for Reflection

  • What unhealthy influence do I need to remove from my life?
  • Is there something God has been telling me to let go?
  • What habits are preventing spiritual health?

Weekly Challenge

Identify one unhealthy influence this week and intentionally remove it.

Replace it with something that strengthens your walk with Christ.

The Result of Healing

Scripture

“Then they came to Jesus, and saw the one who had been demon-possessed… sitting and clothed and in his right mind…”

Mark 5:15 (NKJV)

The transformation was remarkable.

The man who once lived among tombs was now:

  • sitting peacefully
  • clothed with dignity
  • restored mentally
  • spiritually free
  • completely changed

Jesus didn’t merely improve him.

Jesus restored him.

Our Testimony After Healing

Jesus then gave the man a mission.

“Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you.”

Mark 5:19 (NKJV)

Healing is never meant to stop with us.

God heals us so we can testify.

Your testimony may become someone else’s hope.

Christ Makes Our Healing Possible

Isaiah prophesied centuries before Jesus came:

“Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows… But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.”

Isaiah 53:4–5 (NKJV)

Jesus carried our sin, sorrow, and suffering to the cross so that we might experience true healing and eternal life.

Key Takeaways

  • Guard your mind from unhealthy influences.
  • Recognize emotional and spiritual symptoms before they grow.
  • Trust Christ’s authority over every form of brokenness.
  • Bring your deepest wounds to Jesus.
  • Remove unhealthy influences that hinder your spiritual health.
  • Share your testimony so others can see the healing power of Christ.

Living the Message

This week ask yourself:

  • What area of my mind or spirit still needs healing?
  • What voices am I allowing to influence my thoughts?
  • What do I need to surrender completely to Jesus?
  • How can my testimony encourage someone else this week?

Challenge

Pray each day this week:

“Lord Jesus, renew my mind, strengthen my spirit, heal every broken place in my life, and help me walk each day in the freedom You have given me. Use my testimony to point others to You. Amen.”

Remember: Jesus not only heals our bodies—He restores our minds, renews our spirits, and makes us whole.
