Healed Part 1 Sermon Notes

Part 1: Healing the Body and Soul

Primary Scripture

Mark 2:1–12 (NKJV)

Focus Text: Mark 2:1–5 NKJV

“And again He entered Capernaum after some days, and it was heard that He was in the house. Immediately many gathered together, so that there was no longer room to receive them, not even near the door. And He preached the word to them. Then they came to Him, bringing a paralytic who was carried by four men. And when they could not come near Him because of the crowd, they uncovered the roof where He was. So when they had broken through, they let down the bed on which the paralytic was lying. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, ‘Son, your sins are forgiven you.’”

Series Introduction

God desires for us to be healed and made whole.
The healing Jesus offers reaches deeper than symptoms. He heals what is broken in the body and in the soul.

This series gives us space to bring our burdens to the Lord.
It gives us room to admit where we hurt.
It invites us to trust Jesus with the places that still need healing.

Sermon Background

Mark’s Gospel moves fast. He often uses words like immediately because he wants his readers to see the power and urgency of Jesus’ ministry.

In Mark 2, Jesus is in a house in Capernaum, preaching the Word. A paralyzed man is carried there by four men. Their faith and determination become the setting for one of the clearest pictures of Jesus’ power to heal both the body and the soul.

Sermon Points

1. Get to the Right House

Mark 2:1–2 NKJV

“It was heard that He was in the house… And He preached the word to them.”

Teaching Insight

Healing begins by getting to the place where Jesus is present.

The house matters because Jesus is there.
The crowd is there because Jesus is there.
The Word is being preached because Jesus is there.

How do you know Jesus is in the house?

  1. Jesus is Lord of the house
No pastor, deacon, denomination, or personality can take His place.
  2. Jesus is drawing people to Himself
The focus is on Christ, not celebrity.
  3. Jesus is present where the Word is preached
Not opinions. Not agendas. The Word.
  4. Jesus is present where love fills the house
Love is a sign that Christ is there.

Reflection Questions

  • What kind of environment am I putting myself in spiritually?
  • Am I in places that draw me closer to Jesus or distract me from Him?
  • What signs help me know whether Christ is truly being honored?

Personal Challenge

Take a fresh look at the spaces that shape your soul.
Choose this week to place yourself where Jesus is honored, His Word is preached, and love is present.

2. Get All the Help You Can

Mark 2:3 NKJV

“Then they came to Him, bringing a paralytic who was carried by four men.”

Teaching Insight

The paralytic could not get to Jesus by himself. He needed help.

That is true for us too.

You need help when:

  • Your body is tired
  • Your mind is burdened
  • Your emotions are fractured
  • Your soul feels heavy

There is no strength in pretending.
There is no healing in hiding.

Pride, fear, embarrassment, mistrust, and bad teaching keep many people from asking for help.
Those things can push people toward isolation and reckless choices.

Reflection Questions

  • Where do I need help right now?
  • What keeps me from reaching for it?
  • Who has God placed in my life to help carry me?

Personal Challenge

Tell one trusted person where you need support.
Let somebody pray with you, listen to you, or help you carry what feels too heavy.

3. Get to Jesus by Any Means Necessary

Mark 2:4–5 NKJV

“They uncovered the roof where He was… and they let down the bed… When Jesus saw their faith…”

Teaching Insight

The crowd blocked the door. The men did not stop.
They climbed the roof, opened it up, and lowered the man down to Jesus.

They refused to settle for being nearby.
They wanted to get all the way to Jesus.

This is a picture of determined faith.

You need people around you who will:

  • Pray for you
  • Encourage you
  • Push past barriers with you
  • Hold on when you feel weak

You also need your own determination.

Healing often requires persistence.
Pressing through matters.

Reflection Questions

  • How far am I willing to go to get to Jesus?
  • What barriers keep me from pressing into His presence?
  • Who in my life will help carry me when I cannot carry myself?

Personal Challenge

Push past one barrier this week.
Pray again. Fast again. Worship again. Open your Bible again. Ask for prayer again.
Do not stop at the crowd. Get to Jesus.

4. Get a Spiritual Examination

Mark 2:5 NKJV

“Son, your sins are forgiven you.”

Teaching Insight

The man came for physical healing. Jesus addressed his soul first.

That was not a mistake.
That was priority.

Jesus did heal bodies, but His mission was deeper than relief.
He came to deal with sin and save the lost.

The miracles proved He was the Christ.

Matthew 11:4–6 NKJV

“The blind see and the lame walk… and the poor have the gospel preached to them.”

John 20:30–31 NKJV

“These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God…”

When you come to Jesus for healing, blessing, or deliverance, He examines the inner person.

He sees:

  • What hurts
  • What is hidden
  • Where sin has spread
  • What needs forgiveness
  • What needs surrender

Reflection Questions

  • Have I asked Jesus to heal my body without letting Him search my heart?
  • What spiritual issues need to be addressed in me?
  • Am I willing to let Jesus deal with the inner man?

Personal Challenge

Spend time in honest prayer this week. Ask Jesus to search your heart. Confess what He reveals. Invite Him to heal the soul as well as the body.

5. Get a Revelation About Power

Mark 2:6–12 NKJV

“But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins… I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.”

Teaching Insight

The scribes understood something important: only God can forgive sins.

Jesus knew their thoughts. Then He asked a question:
Which is easier—say “your sins are forgiven” or “arise and walk”?

Both are impossible for man.
Both are easy for Jesus.

This miracle reveals His power:

  • Power over sin
  • Power over sickness
  • Power over the human body
  • Power over the soul
  • Power over what seems impossible

The man got up. Picked up his bed. Walked out healed.

Jesus has power to:

  • Rewrite what looks final
  • Heal what looks broken
  • Restore what looks lost
  • Make you whole

Reflection Questions

  • What impossible situation have I placed before Jesus?
  • Do I truly believe He has power over both sin and sickness?
  • Where do I need a deeper revelation of His authority?

Personal Challenge

Bring one impossible matter to Jesus this week in prayer. Name it clearly. Trust His power. Leave it in His hands.

Conclusion

The man who could not walk got up and walked out.
He came in carried by others. He left carrying his own bed.

That is what the power of Jesus can do.

You do not have to leave the same way you came.
The Lord can heal, restore, forgive, and make whole.

Final Reflection

  • Get to the right house
  • Get all the help you can
  • Get to Jesus by any means necessary
  • Get a spiritual examination
  • Get a revelation about power

Jesus heals the body and the soul.

Invitation

God created you and loves you.
Sin separated us from Him.
Because of His love, God sent Jesus to pay the penalty for our sins.

If you are ready to trust Him, pray this prayer:

Prayer of Salvation

“God, thank You for creating me and loving me. I realize I have sinned and been separated from You. I ask You to forgive me. I believe You sent Jesus to die for my sins and that He rose from the dead. I confess Jesus as Lord of my life and Savior of my soul. I repent of my sins and ask You to send Your Holy Spirit into my heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
