Series Introduction

The prophet Malachi records a series of conversations between God and His people. Speaking with God’s authority, Malachi exposes the hearts of Israel and calls them to a higher standard of faithfulness. In this series, Malachi: Raising the Bar, God is challenging His people in six key areas of spiritual life.

Last week, we examined Raising the Bar for Worship. This week, God turns His attention to the priests’ covenant relationship with Him and reminds them that covenant is more than a title—it is a lifelong commitment that shapes how we live and serve.

Scripture Reading

“And now, O priests, this commandment is for you. If you will not hear, And if you will not take it to heart, To give glory to My name,” Says the LORD of hosts, “I will send a curse upon you… Then you shall know that I have sent this commandment to you, That My covenant with Levi may continue,” says the LORD of hosts.
Malachi 2:1–4 (NKJV)

Sermon Introduction

God’s concern was not merely with the priests’ outward performance. He was concerned with their hearts.

The priests were still performing religious duties, but they were no longer honoring God from the heart. Because they had failed to cherish their covenant with Him, their ministry had become empty and ineffective.

God reminds them of His covenant with Levi, calls them back to faithfulness, and warns them of the consequences of neglecting their relationship with Him.

The same challenge speaks to believers today.

1. Acknowledge the Covenant

Scripture

Malachi 2:1–4 (NKJV)

God reminds the priests that their covenant with Him was not something they earned—it was something He established.

The tribe of Levi was chosen by God after the Passover and set apart to serve Him in the tabernacle. They belonged to the Lord because He had redeemed them.

Likewise, believers today belong to God because Jesus Christ has redeemed us.

Just as Levi was purchased for God’s service, we have been purchased by the blood of Christ.

Supporting Scriptures

“Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: ‘Now behold, I Myself have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel… Therefore the Levites shall be Mine.'”
Numbers 3:11–13 (NKJV)

“For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
I Corinthians 6:20 (NKJV)

“Then He took the cup… ‘For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.'”
Matthew 26:27–28 (NKJV)

“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people…”
I Peter 2:9 (NKJV)

As followers of Christ:

  • We are chosen.
  • We are redeemed.
  • We are a royal priesthood.
  • We belong to God.
  • We are called to glorify His name.

Acknowledging the covenant means remembering who saved us, why He saved us, and to whom we belong.

Reflection Questions

  • Do I truly live as someone who belongs to Christ?
  • Have I forgotten the price Jesus paid for my salvation?
  • Does my daily life reflect my covenant relationship with God?

Personal Challenge

Spend time this week thanking God for your salvation. Read I Peter 2:9 each day and remind yourself that you are God’s chosen possession, called to declare His praises.

2. Exercise the Covenant

Scripture

“My covenant was with him, one of life and peace… The law of truth was in his mouth… He walked with Me in peace and equity, And turned many away from iniquity.”
Malachi 2:5–7 (NKJV)

God not only blessed Levi with life and peace, but He also expected faithful living in return.

Notice what God emphasized:

  • Reverence for His name.
  • Speaking the truth.
  • Living with integrity.
  • Walking closely with God.
  • Leading others away from sin.
  • Teaching God’s Word faithfully.

God focused on the character of the priests rather than merely their religious duties.

The same is true for believers today.

Supporting Scriptures

“For in Him we live and move and have our being…”
Acts 17:28 (NKJV)

“For by grace you have been saved through faith… For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works…”
Ephesians 2:8–10 (NKJV)

We are not saved by good works.

We are saved for good works.

God has already prepared opportunities for us to glorify Him through our lives.

As His people, we are called to:

  • Fear and honor God.
  • Speak truth.
  • Live with integrity.
  • Walk in peace.
  • Lead others toward Christ.
  • Be faithful messengers of God’s Word.

Reflection Questions

  • Does my lifestyle match my profession of faith?
  • How am I serving God beyond Sunday worship?
  • Is my life helping others draw closer to Christ?

Personal Challenge

Choose one intentional act of service this week that demonstrates your covenant relationship with God. Let your words, actions, and attitudes reflect Christ in your home, workplace, school, or community.

3. Return to the Covenant

Scripture

“But you have departed from the way… You have corrupted the covenant of Levi… Because you have not kept My ways…”
Malachi 2:8–9 (NKJV)

God confronted the priests because they had drifted away from Him.

They had broken covenant.

They had dishonored God’s name.

They had caused others to stumble.

As a result, they experienced God’s discipline.

Pastor Manuel challenged the congregation with a sobering question:

“Could you be living beneath God’s covenant blessings?”

Sometimes people appear successful on the outside but are spiritually empty on the inside.

They may have:

  • Wealth without peace.
  • Activity without fulfillment.
  • Religion without God’s presence.
  • Happiness without lasting joy.

God’s answer is simple:

Return.

Return to:

  • The joy of your salvation.
  • The confession of your faith.
  • The path of righteousness.
  • Your calling.
  • Your covenant with God.

God’s invitation is not condemnation—it is restoration.

Reflection Questions

  • Have I drifted from my first love for Christ?
  • Is there an area where I need to return to faithful obedience?
  • Am I experiencing the joy of walking closely with God?

Personal Challenge

Take time this week to pray honestly before the Lord. Confess any areas where you have wandered, and intentionally return to the spiritual disciplines that strengthen your relationship with Him—prayer, worship, Bible study, fellowship, and service.

Living the Message

God calls every believer to raise the bar in our covenant relationship with Him.

We do that by:

  • Acknowledging the Covenant — Remember who redeemed you and to whom you belong.
  • Exercising the Covenant — Live out your faith through obedience, integrity, and service.
  • Returning to the Covenant — If you have drifted, come back to God’s grace and faithfulness.

Our covenant with God is not simply about attending church.

It is about walking daily with the One who purchased us through the blood of Jesus Christ.

Weekly Application

This week, ask yourself:

  • Do I truly value my covenant relationship with God?
  • Am I faithfully living out my calling as part of God’s royal priesthood?
  • Is there an area where I need to return to wholehearted devotion?

Pray:

“Lord, thank You for redeeming me through Jesus Christ. Help me never take our covenant relationship for granted. Give me a heart that honors You, a life that reflects You, and the courage to return whenever I drift. May everything I do bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Conclusion

The message of Malachi reminds us that God desires more than religious activity—He desires faithful hearts.

Because of Jesus Christ, we have entered a new covenant sealed by His blood.

That covenant is both a privilege and a responsibility.

As God’s chosen people, let us:

  • Treasure His covenant.
  • Live worthy of His calling.
  • Walk in obedience.
  • Lead others toward Christ.
  • Return quickly whenever we stray.

When we raise the bar for covenant, we experience the joy, peace, purpose, and blessing that come from walking closely with our faithful God.

Invitation

God created you and loves you, but sin separates us from Him. Because of His great love, He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins and rise again so that we might have eternal life.

If you have never trusted Jesus Christ as your Savior, you can receive His gift of salvation today by placing your faith in Him.

If you prayed to receive Christ, we would love to celebrate with you. Please visit the Become a Member page on the Lily Baptist Church website so we can help you grow in your new relationship with Jesus Christ.
