Learn to Love Wisdom

‘The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. ‘
Proverbs 1:7

When I was a child, my grandfather, Rev. Richard Lee Curtis gave me some advice that changed my outlook on life. He told me…

“Whenever you’re around adults, be quiet and listen to them. Then you’ll learn something.”

I took that advice to heart and tried to pay attention whenever an older person was speaking to me or speaking to others. Over time, I learned many things about life. I also learned the difference between wisdom and folly. As I listened for wisdom, I began to discern its value in my life. Even when the words of wisdom didn’t apply to my life in particular, I would file it away to recall it when I needed it.

I learned to love wisdom and all of the benefits it has in my life. Wisdom has helped me avoid problems. It has helped me steer clear of certain unfavorable situations. Through wisdom, I have been able to take advantage of unique, life changing opportunities.

I agree with King Solomon, the writer of Proverbs when he says “fools despise wisdom and instruction.” It is truly foolish to dismiss wise counsel. But what’s more tragic is lacking the ability to know the difference between wisdom and idle conversations. When we can’t recognize wisdom, and fail to appreciate the value of wisdom, we stumble through life instead of walking in abundance.

Let me encourage you to seek the wisdom of God, learning the tone and tenor of his instructions. Spend time reading and meditating on the book of Proverbs. Apply as much of it as you can to your life, and return to it in every season to apply more as needed.
