Freedom From Bondage Sermon Notes

Sermon Notes from Ezra 1:1–6 (NKJV)

Series: Freedom: Releasing, Rebuilding, and Restoring God’s People
2025 Vision: REVIVE US AGAIN! (Psalm 85) — “I believe God is reviving us again.”

Scripture Reading

Ezra 1:1–6 NKJV

“Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and also put it in writing, saying, Thus says Cyrus king of Persia: All the kingdoms of the earth the LORD God of heaven has given me. And He has commanded me to build Him a house at Jerusalem which is in Judah. Who is among you of all His people? May his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem which is in Judah, and build the house of the LORD God of Israel (He is God), which is in Jerusalem. And whoever is left in any place where he dwells, let the men of his place help him with silver and gold, with goods and livestock, besides the freewill offerings for the house of God which is in Jerusalem. Then the heads of the fathers’ houses of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests and the Levites, with all whose spirits God had moved, arose to go up and build the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem. And all those who were around them encouraged them with articles of silver and gold, with goods and livestock, and with precious things, besides all that was willingly offered.”

1) Bound by the Written Word

Key Text: Ezra 1:1 NKJV

“…that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled…”

A. They Violated the Word
Jeremiah 25:4–7 NKJV

“…Repent now everyone of his evil way… Do not go after other gods… Yet you have not listened to Me… to your own hurt.”

  • Judah’s captivity was rooted in persistent disobedience and idolatry.
  • Sin always carries consequences; patterns become prisons.

B. They Were Judged by the Word
Jeremiah 25:8–9 NKJV

“…I will send… Nebuchadnezzar… and will bring them against this land… and make them… desolations.”
Proverbs 16:7 NKJV
“When a man’s ways please the LORD, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.”

  • When our ways don’t please God, even simple things become struggles; relationships strain; progress stalls.

Reflection Questions

  • What repeated patterns (habits, attitudes) have quietly become “chains” in my life?
  • Where have I excused disobedience and then called the consequences “bad luck”?
  • What specific step of repentance is God calling me to take this week?

2) Released by the Spiritual Word

Key Text: Ezra 1:1 NKJV

“…the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia…”

A. They Needed a Spiritual Word
Jeremiah 29:10–11 NKJV

“After seventy years… I will perform My good word toward you… For I know the thoughts that I think toward you… to give you a future and a hope.”

  • God set the limit on the captivity (70 years) and promised hope. They were released on His timetable.
  • spiritual word is more than information; it is revelation you hear, believe, and obey.

B. They Needed a Spiritual Source
Isaiah 44:28 NKJV

“Who says of Cyrus, ‘He is My shepherd… “You shall be built”… “Your foundation shall be laid.” ’”

  • Generations before Cyrus was born, God named the leader He would use.
  • God raises right voices with real authority to announce freedom.

Reflection Questions

  • How do I posture my life to hear a spiritual word (prayer, Scripture, obedience)?
  • Whose voice has God placed as spiritual covering over my life? Am I listening?
  • Where do I need to wait on God’s timing rather than forcing my own?

3) Freed to Receive the Word

Key Text: Ezra 1:2 NKJV

“Thus says Cyrus king of Persia… He has commanded me to build Him a house at Jerusalem…”

Jeremiah 29:12–14 NKJV

“Then you will call upon Me… you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart… I will bring you back from your captivity…”

  • When God speaks release, the right response is seekingpraying, and moving with Him.
  • Freedom is not just from something; it is for something: worship and obedience.

Reflection Questions

  • What has God already said that I need to act on now?
  • How will I reorder my priorities to make worship and obedience central?
  • What practical step will mark my “first day out” of bondage?

4) Will You Walk in Freedom?

Key Text: Ezra 1:3–4 NKJV

“Who is among you of all His people? …let him go up… and build the house of the LORD…”

  • Freedom is an identity (“His people”) and a choice (“let him go up”).
  • Those who didn’t go could still resource the mission, yet they missed the journey.

Reflection Questions

  • Where is God inviting me to “go up” (take a faith step) right now?
  • Am I merely supporting freedom from the sidelines or walking in it personally?
  • What excuses keep me from moving toward God’s assignment?

5) Or Will You Stay in Captivity?

Key Text: Ezra 1:5–6 NKJV

“…with all whose spirits God had moved, arose to go up… And all those who were around them encouraged them…”

  • Some arose because God moved their spirits; others stayed and only supported.
  • Comfort can feel safer than calling; familiarity can feel easier than freedom.

Reflection Questions

  • What comforts or routines keep me tied to an old season?
  • If God set me free today, what would I need to leave behind immediately?
  • Who will I invite to hold me accountable to keep walking in freedom?

Apply It This Week (Believe • Belong • Become)

  • Believe: Read Jeremiah 29:10–14 daily; journal what God is speaking about your freedom.
  • Belong: Share one area you’re seeking freedom in with a prayer partner; pray together.
  • Become: Take one concrete step that demonstrates obedience (a call, confession, forgiveness, serving).

Prayer Focus

“Lord, thank You for Your written Word that reveals truth and Your spiritual Word that releases freedom. Stir my spirit to rise, seek You with my whole heart, and walk in the liberty You have declared. I choose freedom, and I choose obedience. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
