Love Never Fails Part 2 Sermon Notes

A Forgotten Love

Primary Scripture: Hosea 2:1–13 (NKJV)

Opening Scripture

Hosea 2:1–4 NKJV

“Say to your brethren, ‘My people,’ And to your sisters, ‘Mercy is shown.’
Bring charges against your mother, bring charges; For she is not My wife, nor am I her Husband!
Let her put away her harlotries from her sight…
I will not have mercy on her children, For they are the children of harlotry.”

This message continues our series Love Never Fails.
Last week we studied An Appointed Love.
Today we examine A Forgotten Love.

God uses Hosea’s marriage to show His relationship with Israel. The nation drifted away from God. They forgot His love, His covenant, and His care.

This message reveals four things Israel forgot. These truths speak to our relationship with God and to our human relationships.

1. A Forgotten Covenant

Hosea 2:2–4 NKJV

God says, “Bring charges.”
This language comes from the courtroom. A covenant has been broken.

God compares His relationship with Israel to marriage. Covenant defines the relationship. Covenant carries responsibility and commitment.

Exodus 20:1–7 NKJV

“I am the Lord your God… You shall have no other gods before Me.”

God rescued Israel from Egypt and entered covenant with them. Israel promised faithfulness. Over time they turned to other gods.

When covenant fades, commitment fades.

Key truth

Anything less than covenant becomes a cheap substitute for love.

Reflection Questions

  • Where do you see covenant language in your relationship with God?
  • Do you treat your relationship with God as a commitment or a convenience?
  • What habits help you remember your covenant with God?

Personal Challenge

Write a short “renewal prayer” this week. Thank God for saving you and recommit your heart to Him.

2. Forgotten Benefits

Hosea 2:5–8 NKJV

Israel believed their provision came from other sources. They chased false gods thinking those gods supplied their needs.

God revealed the truth. He had been the provider all along.

Psalm 103:1–5 NKJV

“Bless the Lord… and forget not all His benefits.”

God’s benefits include:

  • Forgiveness
  • Healing
  • Protection
  • Guidance
  • Provision
  • Mercy and love

When people forget God’s benefits, they start searching elsewhere.

Key truth

When gratitude fades, wandering begins.

Reflection Questions

  • What blessings in your life have you taken for granted?
  • Do you thank God daily for His provision?
  • Where are you tempted to look for fulfillment outside of God?

Personal Challenge

Make a list of ten ways God has blessed you. Thank Him for each one in prayer this week.

3. Forgotten Consequences

Hosea 2:9–11 NKJV

God describes the results of broken covenant. He removes provision, protection, and joy.

Broken covenant always carries consequences.

Consequences in relationships include:

  • Broken trust
  • Emotional pain
  • Family disruption
  • Financial strain
  • Loss of peace

God allows consequences to wake His people up.

Key truth

Ignoring covenant does not erase consequences.

Reflection Questions

  • How have you seen consequences follow broken commitments?
  • Are there areas where God is calling you back to faithfulness?
  • What warning signs has God shown you recently?

Personal Challenge

Ask God to reveal one area where you need to restore faithfulness. Take one action step this week.

4. A Forgotten Love

Hosea 2:12–13 NKJV

“She went after her lovers; But Me she forgot,” says the Lord.

This is the heart of the message. Israel forgot God.

People forget God when they forget:

  • Who loves them
  • How He loves them
  • Why He loves them

Revelation 2 describes believers leaving their first love. This happens slowly. Love fades when attention shifts.

Key truth

When you forget God’s love, you drift from God Himself.

Love is more than benefits or feelings. Love is commitment and devotion.

Reflection Questions

  • When did you first experience God’s love?
  • What practices help you stay close to Him?
  • Has anything taken God’s place in your heart?

Personal Challenge

Spend time in worship this week. No requests. No agenda. Simply thank God for loving you.

Closing Encouragement

God spoke through Hosea to call His people back.
The message still speaks today.

Remember the covenant.
Remember the benefits.
Remember the consequences.
Remember the love.

God has not forgotten you.
Return to your first love.
