The Key of Faithfulness Sermon Notes

Cheerful: Unlocking the Joy of Generosity — Part 2

Series Purpose

God invites His people to give cheerfully—not grudgingly or by pressure—because generosity reflects His heart and brings real joy (2 Cor. 9:7).

Today’s Big Idea

Faithfulness turns good intentions into Kingdom impact. Love fuels it, faithfulness completes it, sincerity keeps it pure, and equity multiplies it for everyone’s good.

Primary Scripture (NKJV)

  • 2 Corinthians 8:8–9 — “…I am testing the sincerity of your love… For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor…that you through His poverty might become rich.”
  • 2 Corinthians 8:10–11 — “…you also must complete the doing of it…”
  • 2 Corinthians 8:12 — “For if there is first a willing mind, it is accepted according to what one has, and not according to what he does not have.”
  • 2 Corinthians 8:13–15 — “…that now at this time your abundance may supply their lack… ‘He who gathered much had nothing left over, and he who gathered little had no lack.’”

Sermon Notes & Study Guide

1) Love: The Motive that Mirrors Jesus (vv. 8–9)

Paul doesn’t command; he tests love. Jesus is our model of generous love—rich in glory, He became poor for us so we could be rich toward God.

  • Cross-Reference: Philippians 2:5–8, NKJV — Jesus “made Himself of no reputation… and became obedient to the point of death…”

Heart Check Questions

  • When you give (time, talents, treasure), what honestly motivates you, love for God and people, or duty, guilt, image, or reciprocity?
  • Where have you seen “generosity without love” harm the witness of the church? How can we correct that at Lily?
  • In what practical way can you imitate Jesus’ self-emptying love for someone in need this week?

2) Faithfulness: Finish What the Spirit Started (vv. 10–11)

Corinth began the offering a year earlier; Paul urges them to complete it. Desire is good; follow-through is holy.

Heart Check Questions

  • What generous intention did you start (or promise) that still needs to be completed? What’s your specific next step and timeline?
  • How does inconsistent follow-through affect the people we hope to bless? How does it affect our own spiritual growth?
  • What simple practices (calendar reminder, accountability partner, automatic giving, serving schedule) will help you finish faithfully?

3) Acceptance: God Receives the Willing, Not the Measured (v. 12)

God looks first for a willing mind. He receives our generosity “according to what one has, and not according to what he does not have.”

  • Insight: Generosity birthed in faith is pleasing to God (cf. Hebrews 11:4, NKJV).

Heart Check Questions

  • Where have you compared your gift to someone else’s and felt inadequate? What truth in v.12 sets you free?
  • If God measures by willingness and sincerity, how should that reshape the way you give, serve, and worship?
  • What is “within your hand” right now (skill, hour, message, ride, meal) that God may be inviting you to offer?

4) Equity: God Uses Our Abundance to Meet Another’s Lack (vv. 13–15)

Kingdom generosity aims at mutual care. Today your abundance supplies their lack; tomorrow their abundance may supply yours.

  • Manna Principle: Exodus 16:18 echoed in v.15 — God’s economy provides so that “he who gathered much had nothing left over, and he who gathered little had no lack.”

Heart Check Questions

  • Where has God given you “abundance” (knowledge, connections, time block, testimony, funds) that could meet a real lack today?
  • How does Paul’s vision of equality challenge both hoarding and performative giving?
  • What would “equity shaped by love” look like in our church ministries this quarter?

Put It Into Practice (This Week)

  1. Name & Complete One Commitment: Revisit a generous intention you started. Finish it by a specific day this week.
  2. Willing-Mind Offering: Choose a modest, sincere act (note, meal, ride, study help, prayer visit) and do it as unto the Lord (v.12).
  3. Equity Move: Partner with someone whose strength complements your lack (or vice versa) to meet a need together.

Family/Group Conversation Starters

  • Share a time someone’s faithful generosity changed your life. How can you “pay that forward” this month?
  • Where do you feel God nudging you from intention to completion?
  • What systems could Lily Baptist put in place to help members finish what they start (serve team rhythms, benevolence pathways, accountability)?

Memory Verse (NKJV)

“For if there is first a willing mind, it is accepted according to what one has, and not according to what he does not have.” — 2 Corinthians 8:12

  • Belong: “Unite our church in love so our generosity is sincere and healing.”
  • Become: “Make me faithful, willing, consistent in giving, serving, and caring.”

2025 Vision — “Revive Us Again!” (Psalm 85)

Declaration: I believe God is reviving us again.

  • Believe: Take one step that grows your faith (worship attendance, Bible study, devotional plan).
  • Belong: Make one new meaningful connection (prayer partner, greet a visitor, join a class).
  • Become: Take one step of service or witness this month.

Invitation to Salvation

God created you and loves you. Our sins separate us from Him, but His love is stronger than sin. God sent His Son, Jesus, to pay the penalty for our sins. If you confess Jesus as Lord and believe God raised Him from the dead, you will have eternal life (Romans 10:9).

Prayer:
“God, thank You for creating me and loving me. I confess I have sinned and been separated from You. Please forgive me. I believe You sent Jesus to die for my sins and that He rose from the dead. I confess Jesus as Lord and Savior. Send Your Holy Spirit into my heart. In Jesus’s name, Amen.”
