Freedom to Celebrate Sermon Notes

Sermon Notes from Ezra 3:8–13 (NKJV)

Series: Freedom: Releasing, Rebuilding, and Restoring God’s People
2025 Vision: REVIVE US AGAIN! (Psalm 85) — “I believe God is reviving us again.”

Scripture Reading

Ezra 3:8–13 NKJV

“Now in the second month of the second year of their coming to the house of God at Jerusalem, Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and the rest of their brethren the priests and the Levites, and all those who had come out of the captivity to Jerusalem, began work and appointed the Levites from twenty years old and above to oversee the work of the house of the LORD. Then Jeshua with his sons and brothers, Kadmiel with his sons, and the sons of Judah, arose as one to oversee those working on the house of God: the sons of Henadad with their sons and their brethren the Levites. When the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the LORD, the priests stood in their apparel with trumpets, and the Levites, the sons of Asaph, with cymbals, to praise the LORD, according to the ordinance of David king of Israel. And they sang responsively, praising and giving thanks to the LORD: ‘For He is good, For His mercy endures forever toward Israel.’ Then all the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid. But many of the priests and Levites and heads of the fathers’ houses, old men who had seen the first temple, wept with a loud voice when the foundation of this temple was laid before their eyes. Yet many shouted aloud for joy, so that the people could not discern the noise of the shout of joy from the noise of the weeping of the people, for the people shouted with a loud shout, and the sound was heard afar off.”

1) Celebrate Discipleship

Ezra 3:8–9 NKJV

“…began work and appointed the Levites from twenty years old and above to oversee the work of the house of the LORD… arose as one to oversee those working on the house of God…”

  • The returnees didn’t just work; they placed the work under spiritual leadership (priests/Levites).
  • Rebuilding the Lord’s house is spiritual work that requires spiritual oversight and willing submission. This is discipleship.
  • God’s order brings clarity, protection, and progress.

Reflection Questions

  • Who is my spiritual covering? Who are the leaders/mentors I submit to as I grow?
  • Where do I resist correction or coaching? Why?
  • What next step (Sunday School, Bible Study, serving team, prayer partner) will anchor me in discipleship this month?

2) Celebrate Every Step

Ezra 3:10–11 NKJV

When the builders laid the foundation… the priests stood… with trumpets… and the Levites… with cymbals, to praise the LORD… And they sang responsively… ‘For He is good, For His mercy endures forever toward Israel.’ Then all the people shouted with a great shout… because the foundation… was laid.

  • They didn’t wait for the walls, doors, or gold. They praised at the foundation.
  • Celebrating small beginnings builds faith for the rest of the journey (cf. the “little by little” rhythm of God’s work).
  • Responsive worship (call-and-response) unified the people: one voice, one praise, one purpose.

Reflection Questions

  • What “foundation” has God just laid in my life (new habit, open door, healing step, reconciliation)?
  • How can I mark the moment: a testimony, offering, journal entry, family prayer, or corporate praise?
  • Where have I delayed praise because it’s “not finished yet”? What will change today?

3) Celebrate the Old and the New

Ezra 3:12–13 NKJV

“But many of the priests and Levites… old men who had seen the first temple, wept… Yet many shouted aloud for joy… so that the people could not discern the noise of the shout of joy from the noise of the weeping…”

  • Memory and hope stood side-by-side: elders grieved what was lost; others rejoiced at what God was doing now.
  • God allows both, honest lament and loud celebration, but calls us to move forward with Him.
  • The glory is not about the building’s size; it’s about God’s presence among His people.

Reflection Questions

  • What part of my past do I still mourn and how can I honor it without staying stuck?
  • Where is God inviting me to release comparison (“first temple”) and embrace today’s assignment?
  • How can I practice a both/and response: give space to grief and still shout for joy over new foundations?

Apply It This Week — Believe • Belong • Become

  • Believe: Re-read Ezra 3:8–13 and write a two-sentence thanksgiving for a current foundation God has laid.
  • Belong: Share a testimony of a “small win” with your family, class/small group; celebrate together.
  • Become: Choose one concrete act of obedience that advances the build, join a ministry team, schedule devotional “altar time,” or reconcile with someone.

Prayer Focus

“Lord, thank You for leaders who guide us, for foundations You are laying, and for grace to honor the past while stepping into the new. Teach us to celebrate every step. Let our weeping and our shouting both become worship to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
